Hi everyone this is a crazy question but I am setting up a 30 gallon freshwater crab habitat.

I took an old aquaclear filter and made a waterfall in the tank. the filters impeller is under the water and is working fine.

I believe its the same impeller as my submersible UV sterilizer and tried it. it seems to work fine but I am just wondering what you guys think.

Lemme know...

I cant visualize what your talking about...the PUMP will work just fine but the filter compartment as well as the waterfall will be useless.

no its working right now. the filter is 1/2 under the water perched upon a rock which the water is flowing down.

im asking if you guys would see a problem with it down the road.

If I know what your talking about, with like the filter not on the back of the tank but in the water actually, then I say it is fine. I might just worry about where the wire meets the impeller, as that part is not supposed to be underwater when used properly. Silicone around the wire if you want to be safe.

If you are going to continue this, for your safety you need to have the filter plugged into a GFCI recepticle. This sounds to me like a recipe for electrocution.

The motors in the HOB filters are "potted" (encased in resin) the same as powerhead/internal filters are ,even canister filter motors are potted, it's no more dangerous submerged than a heater is.

Yeah, that sounds good and all... BUT it's always better safe than sorry. It sucks to learn your mistake the hard way. I agree on the GFI if you are dead set on using it. But, really... is $30 too much to spend for peace of mind?
