Can I trust LFS to foster my fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I’ve got trust issues and no way would I trust a lfs with my ‘kids’ (Fish). I would keep ‘em in a giant igloo with a filter and heater next to my bed before I’d take a chance like that.

So I’ll be moving out of state within the next few months and I am having trouble figuring out how to take my fish with me. I might be able to keep them at my current house until I get something set up at the new place but that would be very expensive to buy new tanks and equipment. I thought about asking my LFS to foster some of my more prized monsters but I would have to have multiple locations agree because they don’t have the tank to house all of them. But can I actually trust that they’ll spend the appropriate effort in keeping them? I’m thinking about having them foster my Monos, RTC, Albino arrowana, and the aba aba at the minimum. The rest of my fish I might sell, not really sure yet. What are the opinions that float out there?
If for a very long time, I also don't think it would be very reliable.

I tried this once. LFS charged me money to house my fish for a week. It was a hefty fee. I felt kind of offended but had no choice considering my tank had just cracked and I needed to get a new tank asap.
Another lfs held the other fish and the next day one of the idiot employees sold them all. The owner of that store not only ordered the species that were sold but gave me a few extras for the headache free of charge.
It is a gamble. Most of the times it works out. But with big monster fish most fish stores don't have proper space.

Sorry to hear that happened to you.

This would be the biggest risk imo.
I was highly upset. I even let the owner know I was going to leave a bad review. He assured me he told all his employees about my fish but that it may have happened on accident. But because they were specality fish when people saw them they thought they were for sale. If I remember correctly, it was a few datnoids, a arowana and some rarer silver dollars. but he ordered and got most for me.

Any fish rescue near you, they have more chance of being able to look after them whilst you move and doing it right. Or indeed any other members on here.

Honestly it depends on where you live and where you are moving to- almost majority of the monsters in the US are easily purchased depending on collecting season or availability. fish will not complain that you kept them in a stock tub for months til you got setup going for them. You gotta do what you gotta do to survive this economy and what is the best for the fish. Best of Luck to you on the move.
