Can i use a 200 watt heater on a 10 gallon tank?

Hey guys, i recently broke my 10 gallon heater. I forgot what watt it was. I believe 50 or 100 watt. Can i just use my 200 watt heater? It's submersible. Or is it too powerful for it.

Basically, Yes you can. They have thermostats in them so they don't heat up the water more than you want. A higher wattage heater will turn on, for shorter periods of time, to keep the temperature consistent.

All that is needed is 50 watts or so though.

You can if it's working properly. However, if the thermostat sticks in the on position you will heat the water very very quickly and probably kill the fish.

Yep, but a lower wattage heater would do the same, just at a slower pace.

I wouldnt suggest it personally just go invest in a 10 dollar heater from walmart.Pretty much what it will do is just heat the water faster way faster.This may cause stress on the fish with the dramatic temp change.
