Can I use a former salt tank for fresh?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's all a matter of aesthetics. Not many things survive a transition from salt to dry to fresh. If you were concerned about life forms, don't be. If you want to clean off the coraline algae (the purple growth that is probably bleached white right now), you can do it with vinegar and water, but I find a razor blade works best.

If you are planning to put expensive fish in it, I will suggest you put some test fish first after cleaning the tank very well. Atleast this way, if you lose the test fish, you will not be too worried.

This is a terrible idea. Fishless cycle your aquarium with plain ammonia(cheap), use Stability to speed it up(if you are impatient), and once you have it cycled (0-ammonia, 0-nitrIte, nitrAte>0) then add your fish. No use spending money you don't have to on fish you don't want.

Well, Wax on wax off - It is all done. Thanks for the advice everybody. The vinegar worked very well. It wasn't too bad. He must have cleaned the filter before he gave it to me. It's an Eheim 2213. The impeller shaft is broken, but that's replacable. The only other thing I am going to replace is the tubing.

It will take some time to get this tank going, so it will have plenty of time to cycle. (with out any sacrificial test fish!)
I want to have a tank ready for the East Coast Cichlid auction in May - if I can hold out that long!
I'll have two 20's ready too.

Mine used to be a reef tank then changed to Fresh water without any trouble just clean it well. heres a before and after shot of mine
