can i use a sump as a holding tank for baby rays?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
here is what i can do. i will move both fx5's to 1 side of the tank. i will remove my emporer 400(dont really use it), add the sump to the other side and face return towards the fx5's. maybe even add a small bag with bioballs into the sump. i could add 1 baffle where the water comes in the sump and place bio media there.

also i plan of moving my uv sterilizer(25w aqua uv) to underneath the stand and plumb the sump return threw it.

i think the hardest part will be setting the overflow level. i have a drip system the maintains the tank level the same all the time.

decieded on a 50gallon sump. 36,18,17. it will fit best.

here is a delema. if the power shuts off a certain amount of water will drain into the sump, we all know that. but i also run a drip system at 3gph. depending on how long the power is out, the sump will have to hold that extra water until the power comes back on. i think. this may not work out too well.

Have the overflow in the sump? Could be possible. If its not to low compared to were the water goes. Since you have drip i gues you already have overflow to the drain on the main tank.

if i put the overflow in the sump to maintain water level at lets say 9" . then the power goes off. the drain will keep the water level at 9" . when it starts back up the sump will run dry.

Yes you are right about the sump and the drip but you can solve that with a solenoid cutting off the water intake when the power goes out. Fish dogs idea is alot better than adding the pups to the sump. I have tried both and found fishdogs method is the best thing I've done for my pups. My pups have started eating quicker, I can feed easier, everything is just easier than a sump.

Agree here, but something to think about, 55 gallon tanks tend to be all tempered and can not be drilled. Just wanted to give you a heads up, as far as i know that is the only size that is consistently 100% tempered glass.

I do like the penthouse idea. I would need to find a way to make it work. I'm worried if I do the penthouse my super huge arowana will hit it and either hurt himself or the penthouse.

Wish I had a full pic of this other idea I have used. You take a plastic tub, drill some holes in it, and use foam pipe insulation with zip ties to surround the top. The tub will float around on the surface, add an air stone and you are done.

Another pic of the same idea but this time I put pot scrubbies in it to keep my bio media alive when I had to put up a temporary pond because my tank sprung a leak.

Both the penthouse and this idea are really good ideas. Works, keeps them safe and solves the problem..
I have a egg creat divider that I use for my tanks. If I need to seperate for any reason, I just put suction cups on the wall, put the divider up (bury the botom in the sand for a stronger hold) and then then put more suction cups up to hold it in place. Basicly I sandwich the eggcreat between suction cups to hold it in place. Works well.
But I really like the penthouse ideas... both of them
