Can I use this cabinet for my new fish tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks Goliath Tigerfish

there is a iron rod just beneath the table cover as shown in the picture. would it make the "Floor" a bit stronger to be able to bear the load of fat guys?

I would think the metal wouldn’t do much to help the stand bear the weight of the tank however I’m not an animal covert and this isn’t legal advice.

No offence but I think your treading on very thin ice, I worked at an aquatic shop for close to 10 years and it was so common for people to come in panicking because they put there fish tank on a stand that wasn't designed for it.

It maybe OK for a few months but than crack the base splits and that will cost more to fix than a new stand.

Again no offence but are you not the guy that was worried about buying insurance for the tank incase of that happening, if you do you won't be covered for that as its not a proper tank stand so the fault will lie with you.

I think your money would of been better spent buying the wood to build a stand or buying the correct stand for the tank.

This is why you don’t type without looking. I’m not even sure what I had meant to say that got autocorrected to animal covert.

:( I am worried now. what does it mean then? will it break? the size of the tank is 123L. how soon before I know that the stand cannot take this? what are the risks?

just beneath the surface cover, there is strong piece of metal. wouldn't it support?
First off I would like to say, we are not trying to scare you or deter you from keeping fish or your tank. We are giving you advise mostly based on our own and others experience to help you learn the easy way rather than the hard way.

there is no guarantee in either direction that the stand will hold or break. IKEA is not known for structurally sound furniture that is designed to hold up 300lbs of water, glass, and fish over extended periods of time. They are known for inexpensive mass produced furniture that often crumbles or deteriorate within about the first year of use. You can do the math on this equation.

the risks are- if the stand gives way, you will have 30 gal of water fall from wherever it is and travel downward through out your house. Leaving(expensive) broken glass shards, and wood particles in a big pile next to your bed. So if this is on a second floor, look below to see where the water will travel, and you can calculate the water damage. Also my experience with these scenarios is it typically happens either when you are not home to prevent it or in the middle of the night while you have an important meeting in the morning that you don’t want to be late for. So you will most likely loose a bunch of sleep and be grouchy for that important meeting. Ask me how I know this ???

I know it sucks because you really want the tank to be running and it feels good to finally have water in it etc. But it could be in your best interest to make sure you have a solid stand that is rated for roughly 1000lbs. That way you know that 300lbs is no problem.

If looks are not of concern a couple of cinder blocks and a piece of plywood is just about the strongest and cheapest stand you can get.

Well you could put 10 400 pound fat guys in a 4’ x 2’ area...

Could you really? I tend to doubt it...

Insurance...cardboard stands...most recently, resignation and defeat after 2 weeks...am I alone in thinking I detected a whiff of troll somewhere in this massive onslaught of threads?

I logged in this morning and I honestly don't know how the site hasn't self combusted with all the activity. I thought it was another spam account it's been that crazy.

I've been watching all of them but up until this very post I haven't taken part. Other people have taken time out and given good advice in all the threads, and then they go and question whether the hobby's for them after all!

I smell something fishy.

I hate to tell you, but I don't believe that stand is suitable for your tank.
I have several IKEA pieces and they are heavy and strong, but not designed for that purpose, and not suitable as aquarium stands. None of their stuff is made of solid wood, everything is pressed wood with laminations to appear solid. Nothing wrong with that, just not designed to hold an aquarium. Even if it were real wood, the design does not offer strength in the manner needed as per a ~8.3 lbs/gallon of water.

Have to put in a caveat. Ikea almost always uses solid wood (pine). In fact they don't really have chip board/pressed stuff much that I'm aware of. That being said I wouldn't use that dresser either.

You could even get a metal breakdown stand and put a 3/4" board over it, I did that with an acrylic tank with no problems.

TITANEZE metal stands assemble in 5 min and come in diffrent sizes.

Dear All,

I apologize for opening many threads. I am newbie in the world of fish lovers and fish keepers. I have mild psychological condition called OCD. I tend to worry a lot when I don’t know about some new that I start. I help other fellow humans by answering their question and helping them in other technology forums. I opened account here because I couldn’t ask for a fish related matter in technology forum. Those tech forums are driven by incentive of answering per thread, and users do not tend to answer multiple question on the same thread, hence users are opening anew thread for any new question.

I went to two shops who sell aquarium stands and both of the stands that I checked were made from the same crappy scarps of wood and none of them were made from real wood. The shopkeeper said that in Europe ikea product quality is much better then of some other countries and he said that I could hardly find any stand that would be made of oak wood and even if I found it it would cost a fortune. I found some metal stands but they had no drawers, I live in a small apartment with my wife and two kids and we have to use the space wisely and these drawers are keeping alot of our stuff. I went later today to find a carpenter to alter this furniture and provide more support to it. But I was told it is weekend and I need to contact on weekdays. I checked with my home insurance Tryg company and I was told that I already have a coverage for water damage and if in case tank breaks and I only have to pay the deductible of 1100 DKK and I am covered for any water damage as well as any other damage caused by water spill. But I still do not want to take risk, probably because my OCD :)

on Monday, I will go and search for a carpenter, or worst case scenario I will pay 400 usd for a oak stand that has drawers :(

I am grateful wholeheartedly to all of you for the support you given me. I really appreciate it and it means a lot to me. I don’t want to sound sentimental but I was overwhelmed with the unconditional love and support I received on this forum. Everyone tried their best to give me their best advice and guidance. This why I have strong faith and faith in humanity. There can be a bad apple in every tree but the majority of people are very good people , like you people.

thank you very much again for everything!

warm regards,
