so im wondering if you have live rock in your sw tank, can it die off? is that possible if you make a mistake with your tank?

Pretty hard to completely kill LR. The majority of LR in my tank was stored in buckets for about a month before I bought the setup, and got it running again. It was all submersed in SW though.

The rock colonized with all sorts of goodies, but it was only what survived the dieoff.

You COULD kill your LR...but it would take, bleach, freshwater, drying out, or something similar to completely KILL the rock. Make sense?

yup. so you mention fresh water could kill your live rock, now you probobly mean like if you put live rock in 100% freshwater. The reason i asked the question is because the live rock i have in my tank looked good in my oppinion. It had a brown sorta color, some algae and i have a piece or 2 now that have completly changed there look. I topped off my tank one afternoon with freshwater, i added maybe a gallon of water to my tank, the water i added was declorinated and it sat for an hour or so before i topped off the tank. The next morning is when i noticed the change in my rock its sort of a green crusty color, its not pertuding from the rock its not long or wavy its like the rock color changed. I was curious what it was so i tried to scrape some of it off and its very tough, so im pretty sure its growth of some sort. Im sure my description doesnt mean much with out a picture but now ive told you the hole story, maybe you can make sence of it. ill try to get a pick of my rock.

thanks for responding to the thread

Topping off with decholorinated freshwater to compensate for water lost due to evaporation is the right thing to do. You did nothing wrong imo, unless the water was scorching hot or very cold.

The green crusty stuff could just be green coraline or film algae starting to develop. I highly doubt you did anything to interupt the bio cycle of your tank.

i did my best to snap some pics, i hope this helps, the first 2 pics are the before pics, the last 3 are the change in the result, hope you can see a diff.

Live rock sure can die off but it is rare unless you add copper to treat disease then it will most likely wipe out the rock.

no ive never added copper, i have media in my filter that removes copper and metals..its from purigen

P.S sorry for the double pics of everything, its the first time i have ever posted pics . oops lol

That green spot looks like green corline algae. I had soem on my rock before I broke my tank down. I know people that pay extra for it because they like the extra color. I liked it as well. It did no harm in my 60 gallon reef for 6 months, so you should be fine.

Id really rather not have any coraline in my tank at all. Its a resource hog if you are going to keep corals, and it also impacts your PAR. Most people dont mind it, I tolerate it, but Id have to deal with it.

I love how my rocks are all purple and red. Coraline can come in almost every color of the rainbow.

Give your rock some time. Its going to get worse before it gets better when you add new rock.
