When I kept discus I had a friend look after the tank for a few days and came back to green water, I ended up with shutting out light for 48 hours by wrapping the tank with towels to kill it all off, I suspect this was due to overfeeding. This is my only experience with an algae bloom in a tank, so I guess it could be over feeding if the tank is not in direct sunlight.
