Koi can easily be in warmer waters of 75+ that is when they are most likely to respond to spawning. Anyone who has an outdoor pond can attest to the fact that when the summer heat is up the temp of the pond is up. If you can't maintain the heat then don't.

Good Point, many Koi keepers heat their ponds to acheive higher growth rates BUT the key as you say is stability.

I was only thinking today...lets assume a Koi lives 40 years but goes in to "hibernation" every winter with a massive slow down, would they only live 20-30 years if we heated their water all year (It would be easy for my pool heater to heat a pond too)

yeah.. it was just an idea that i thought wasn't gonna work but thought i'd check with you guys on here. as for koi.. if they hibernate every summer, i dunno if they would live longer or not but they definitely woudl not grow as big as those who live in a year round tropical climate as they basically will be eating and growing year round as opposed to 1/3 or 1/2 a year only.

Yeah, I think the heating is to keep them eating, I read, years ago, that someone in Japan or China had invented a "chip" to con their growth hormones in to keeping them growing.

Glad to hear you asked for the advice and then listened!

The thing with heating a koi pond is to stabilize temperatures, reduce the length of winter, raise the minimum winter water temp, and Lenthen the growing season. But you don't want to heat them to summer temperatures all year round. If you do the females have fatal problems with egg compaction. They need all four seasons to remain healthy over the long haul.

good advice, if he's only keeping koi, because it's in his basement it will be 65F year round. would that be a problem?

I would not keep koi year round in 65F.They will not grow at that temp.Koi need summer temps in the mid to upper 70's for proper growth.
