Ok so I got fed up with doing large water change just to rid my gravel of all those nasty stuff. So I went and brought an eheim gravel cleaner. I was impressed by this cleaner at first. It was way better and more powerful than Mr. Cleaner.

I found 2 problems and would like to mod my gravel cleaner to address them

1. Power consumption is really high, i do daily vac and the batteries died every 2~3 days. I don't like replacing batteries so often.

2. The mesh isn't fine enough to trap the smallest particles. Hence every time i gravel vac, the water would end up cloudy.

I hope to mod my eheim gravel cleaner to counter those problems. Would it be possible for me to connect the gravel cleaner to a plug? I plan on drilling a hole where the on/off button will be, wire into it and seal it with sealant [optional since my tank isn't deep enough for the whole gravel cleaner to be completely submerged but i just like to be on the caution side]. Therefore whenever I feel like vacumming the gravel, all i have to do is plug it into a socket and turn it on.

Could I cut out a micron sock and place it in the collection chamber to filter out those small particles for the 2nd problem?

Any expert kind enough to give advice/guide. Im open to all suggestions. Just don't feel comfortable modding such an expensive equipment with no knowledge.

Don't know how to wire things up, but I'm sure it's possible. Seen wilder things done.

The micron sock idea would probably work as well.

You can't modify it to be plugged into a receptacle. The circuitry is designed to handle low amounts of dc, if you were to connect it to ac it wouldn't work. Why not buy rechargeable batteries?

You can mod it to use a plug. Find out what voltage it uses and buy the right sized DC adapter.

I have an Eheim gravel cleaner and IME, you can make the batteries last longer by taking them out of the gravel cleaner when you're not using them. My batteries would drain in 2-3 days like yours did when I left them in, but now that I take them out, I can use the gravel cleaner much, much longer. Don't even remember the last time I changed batteries.

I like this cleaner, but I wish it had more power. It seems like the really big pieces of fish dookie take a long time to be sucked up into the cleaner and some pieces can't be sucked up at all. I have bichirs and they lay monster-sized turds!
