Can my fish handle it?

^ good post. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I am of the opinion of get her done. long as you are running good filtration removing the substrate and replacing should not be an issue, with good filtration and bio media it should not send you into a mini cycle. I do not count on my tanks substrate or decor to do my bio filtration, that's all canisters and HoB to some extent.

SKJ, I run a duel bottom drilled reverse UG system on my 180. 5" of crushed gravel pushing 1300 gph, I also run 2 AC110, I have had no water issues and my white crushed has looked great for past 2 years. good vacuuming and 90% water changing every Saturday helps. stuff never settles in the gravel but is pushed to the side for easy vacuuming. intakes have large sponges on them, cleaned once a week.

I like the idea of putting some in a pot, or as Tom said in a bag.
You might also want to put an air stone, or run current near the pot/bag.
The benaficial bacteria are facilitative aerobes and would do well with current and aerated water, the current also draws ammonia to them..

should add i also have 145 and 100g tanks, the 180 does not apply to them as the substrate in the 180 is a large part of my bio filtration in it.

if the gravel is not getting oxygenate flow, will not make a dif, but IMHO it is not needed if there is already sufficient bio filtration in the filters.

Cheese cloth should work right?

His filter is a Top Fin 60 not a large bio capacity. Why not error on the side of caution.

Yes cheesecloth will work or you could get mesh bags at the LFS they're cheap.

Perfect! Still doing the pots though. I have a small plant that I'd like to keep going.

agreed, but for the gravel bag to be effective it will need flow through it, not around it.

maybe poke a airline in it so the bubbles create a draw through the gravel by way of displacement.
