Can my Floors handle this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how tall was your tank? cause 1" is beyond overkill unless the tank is 36" tall. 3/8" will be perfectly fine and this hieght and yes ive dealt with the humidity before, i had a 125, a 210 and two 55s in one room. very muggy feeling

I also think only an expert tank maker could make 3/8's work IF AT ALL

thats sort of what I was getting at. even though height is the main determining factor in glass thickness, its not the only factor.

a 300g with only 3/8 is a bit scary. my 65 gallon tank has 3/8th glass, and its standard..building one 5 times the volume with the same glass thickness?

it had better be outside :)

in all seriousness, there are two options here:

a) save up the cash, buy thicker glass and go to town

or

b) use the 3/8" glass, but the tank is going to have to be quite a bit smaller IMO.

what I am saying is this:

you want to build to a level of safety that at least equals what the normal manufacturers are doing (ie Marineland, Aqueon, Oceanic) or overbuild (ie go thicker than they do)

but dont go thinner. that could be asking for trouble.

one thing that you don't want is to look at your 300g tank and say "well, it should hold.."

:)

haha good point. but 3/8" glass with a 3" lip around thats only 16" of pressure going on the glass.

lol why are you even asking people here for advice? you've pretty much disagreed with or ignored everything thats been said.

face the facts man, you don't live in a house that was built to handle having a large fish tank in it. and arguing glass width is extremely ignorant. theres a reason why you NEVER see tanks over a certain size built with 3/8in glass. the chances of a blowout are huge. heck, my 72X36X30 3/4in acrylic tank has a legit bow to it and its only a year old. i'd hate to see a 12ft sheet of 3/8 glass and the explosion that would ensue.

regardless, the fact that you won't pay for an inspector really says it all...

i did dissagree with one thing, glass thickness. but taking the safety of my son into thought i decided to use 1/2" glass and that was like 2 posts ago. so maybe you need to re-read. I took tank size into consideration, i started with a 950g idea down to a 250. and youre right i wont pay 2 grand for an inspection. Did you miss a few post or something

so much talk. we need more doing.

Take a picture of the area where you want to put it, and then take pictures of whats directly underneath the floor.

this way we can help you.!

will do, been having really bad storms and ive been busy keeping my pond water level will do ASAP
