can my oscar live in a 60 gallon tank for life

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To everyone who's saying 'Yes', his Oscar already has Hole in the Head because he can't keep up with water quality. Please think about carefully about your answers before giving them. We're talking about living breathing animals that are going to suffer and die due to your bad advice.

OP-YOU NEEED A BIGGER TANK.

Judging from the original poster's other threads, it looks like he's also interested in adding a piranah to the tank. That seems like a quick and painless way to cure HITH (sarcasm).

Yes you can......but no you shouldnt. Eeally not enough space for the fish. I feel guilty keeping a single angelfish in a 60 so the thought of an Oscar in s 60 is pretty inhumane in my eyes.

Your probably going to do it anyways, but I wouldnt

I apologize if I came off rude earlier but please reconsider getting a smaller fish that fits the tank comfortably. Wouldn't you rather have beautiful healthy fish at their peak than a nasty filthy disease ridden(HITH/HLLE) big fish kept in a disgusting brown water tank? No amount of filtration will fix it, you'll have to do maybe two to three water changes per week to keep up with his waste. Have fun with that. Alright I've said my two cents maybe three, now do what you want.

We really need to get a minimum (or best tank size for a solo) Oscar sticky started. We must go through this once a week now. Maybe one of the more experianced "Oscar guys" could put together an Oscar care and maintenance info sheet that could be stickyed by itslef and esey to see. I would suggest useing 90 gals (48x18x25) as the min not even a 75 at this point.

I don't consider myself enough of an Oscar expert to do it justice but at this point it seems even basic info would be helpful.

An Oscar sticky does sound nice, Tom. It is a common question, especially over the last few months. But to the OP, I wouldn't suggest a 55 hex or standard or a 60 for an Oscar for life. A 75 should be bare minimum. i think you find so many people keeping Oscars in 55s because at many chain stores this is the size that customers are told will hold an Oscar for life. I don't keep Oscars at this present time but I have friends that do. I can confidently say that a healthy adult Oscar will not live a proper life in a 12" tank. They grow large in both length and girth. If you have ever seen a healthy adult Oscar you will realize that 55s and other similar sized tanks are not good for Oscars or any other large cichlids. Don't make your judgements based on people's experience of keeping an Oscar in small tanks. It's not really truthful. Look through the threads for pictures of Oscars that are kept in proper setups. Then you will realize that tiny tanks just don't make much sense. Between all of your threads about this I'm sure that you have enough feedback to make the right decision.

I was just about to suggest looking at some of the pictures of mature, healthy O's in large tanks, but looks like i was a little slow.
It's bad when websites such as Petsmart list information about the Oscar such as "Tank Setup: 40+ gallons" which would suggest that you could keep one in a tank smaller than a 55gal. Another piece of misinformation is the old "1 inch of fish per gallon of water" that makes it seem like a 12 -14 inch Oscar leaves tons of room to add other fish to a 55gal. tank.

+1
seems like we get an oscar or gt thread every week

well I messed up converting the sqare inches into gallons and found out it was a 65 gallon. PS my 65 gallon is 18 inches deep witch gives him plenty of room to turn around in
