cheomis vs. a dog?

oooh what are you putting in your fx5?
i was hoping that you were talking about a fish in your tank instead of an actual yellow labrador.

its called fluval clearmax. i have a nitrate problem and i thought that these would clear it up, just did a water change tonight so my filter sucked up sme detritus, and will be cleaned tomorrow.

ooohhh no the yellow lab cichlid I meant!!!!

I have purigen to help with the nitrate and the clouded water issue, it was so bad I couldn't see my fish. I'm still worried though cause my fish don't seem to happy.

well if you did a good size water change, and id put extra purigen in there, id give it a few for the filter to suck up most of it, then id clean the filter and put new media in.

Thats what I did, this problem where my water turned milk white was in the beginning of the week, I learned it was an ammonia spike so I did a massive water change and changed my filter media in the old filters. I recieved the FX5 midweek and put it up thursday night with all new media. Wednesday night I did another water change.

I even bought a powerhead today and it seems my arowana loves it!

as far as i know, im not sure why a new filter media would expel that color and have it be ammonia? shouldnt it be trying to get rid of that? that could not have been good for your fish.

oh no the filter's before didnt have new media. I think what caused the ammonia to freak out like that was there was a nitrate spike and it went epic! LOL So by the time I changed the water and the media on the old filters it was still lingering.

When I put the FX5 the water was clearing right away, I tested the water and aside from KH being a bit low (added crushed coral in a little media bag to the filter) there was no signs of ammonia or nitrates. I think the whole ordeal just took a toll on my fish, the arowana is fine, my plecos are fine, my tire track eel is fine, but the yellow labs and the jack demseys aren't their usual active selves...so keeping an eye on them.

id give it over night, and see how they r doing in the morning. unless they have been like that for days, then id wait longer

Good idea, tomorrow I will check water params again and see how they are doing. Oddly enough...I'm typing this and just looked to my left where the tank is...all three jack dempsey's are staring at me! LOL
