Can not kill the Ick

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so i think im going to just return my med and stop with the rid ich and just keep the temp high and keep up with my salt and waterchanges

Well, today has been day ten with some fluctuation in the fish's well being. Two days ago the spots were about 99% gone. I still did the treating becuase I knew I am supposed to about three days after all the spots are gone. Yesterday I come home from work and they have spots on them again. I have been doing the 20% water change and then adding the medicine to the amount of water in the tank (not the amount taken out) I know it can concentrate the amount of medicine in the tank, but if that was the case, you would think that there would be a high concentration and the ich would stop coming back. So today is day 10. I put in the dosage before I left for work, and will put in the dosage again when I get home after I do the water change. The carbon has been taken out from the start. The salt I used in the past was aquarium salt, not the marine salt. I feel like I am doing everything right and it's just not working. I think I will bump up the temps a little bit. Through all of this, my mystery snail bred. I'm not sure if Ich affects them, but if it does, it nor the medicine is affecting either one of them. It's just these barbs I can't seem to cure. Thanks all for the information again. I'm fighting the good fight here. It seems like it may have been stopped from spreading, but killing it off now is the issue. I will definitely keep you guys posted as it all goes down.

Make sure to treat them up to 2 weeks after the the spots dissapear and not 3 days...O yea maybe in the future you might want to invest in a UV sterizlier

Which med are you using now?

How much do UV sterilizers cost? If the fish getting infected are cheap then it may be more cost effective to just buy new fish. Although with more expensive fish or a saltwater setup, a UV sterilizer would probably be a good investment. Looks like I found something to consider for my own setup.

I am not sure what a UV sterilizer is. Is that something that would even be used on a freshwater tank? I wouldn't object to treating for two weeks after the spots are gone, but I can't even get them to be totally gone for more than a day. Every other day is a good day. The bad days are when a spot or two will reappear. Man this medication is getting expensive. It's about 6 dollars a bottle and is good for about 4 treatments. My lights won't turn on for another hour or so, so I will not know how well they are today until then. If it goes by the schedule it has been going by, the spots should be 99% gone. VERY frustrating.

i stoped using my meds and just kept with the salt heat and water changes and im all good

I have had great success with Jungle Labs product Ick Clear I think its called. I turned up the temp to 80-86 and added the tablets of Jungle's Ick Clear, within a couple days I could see improvements.

Worked for me every single time. May turn your water green though, but water changes / carbon will remove that.

Sometimes the ick parasite becomes immune to certain meds after using them for awhile. Hasn't happend to me, but I hear thats what can happen.

Salt has never done any good for me. I don't use it, never will. I keep a pharmacy under my tank just incase. Havn't had to use any of it in a long time. Though I may need some parasite clear from Jungle. My JD seems to twitch and rub, along with a few other guys. High Nitrates were probubly the cause, did lots of WCs so ima keep an eye on them now.

let the meds work it wont work if your doing water changes everyday!!!!

Your supposed to change your water every 24-48 hours, depends on the meds. Usually a 25% water change is what you do. I don't always change the water every 24-48 hours. Sometimes I would change at 36 hours.
