Can oscars do well with jack dempseys?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would do 1 Oscar and nothing else.

But 1 Oscar and one less territorial fish like a Severum would be good. 75g might seem big now, but even an Oscar and a JD will feel cramped when fully grown in there together.

Either way 2 of either of those fish in the same tank = aggression. Ive kept these guys before and they fight ALOT as they mature. That is unless you have a fairly large tank like some of the other folks stated.

I think 1 oscar and 1 jack would be fine in a 75 gallon. Remember that they swim around in different areas of the tank. The JD will hang around the bottom and the oscar is a mid water swimmer. Put a little cave at the bottom for the JD.

i think it is too much, not enough swimming room. i would go with either a single oscar or a breeding pair of Jack Dempseys.

I would have to say 1 O 1 JD only. Or a pair of JD. You could add some smaller species of cat fish with either of these combos.

i have, 2 oscars, 1 jack, 1 green terror,2 tinfoil barbs,1 raphael cat,a pleco, and a red lobster in a 100 gallon. So far all get along. They have been together for about 2 yrs. The cat is 6" long and barbs about 5". The cichlids are 4-5".

yeah, i'd say MAYBE 1 oscar and 1 dempsey. However, you could definitely have one of each as a full grown specimen in a 90g.

The only way an oscar can be 4-5 inches in a period of 2 years is if your water is so dirty that it completely stunted there growth to nothing. Oscars should be over 10 inches in 2 years.

you could do that for like 5 or 6 months.

but after that your oscars will need a bigger set up.

you'll need some pretty sick filtration for all 4.
