hi, i've been searching my fridge, and found few chunks of pork meat, can i use them to feed rtc and pacu and p-bass...well the big fishies basically.

i found that pork is not as lean as beef heart, so i'd like to know what kind of damage will it cause to the fish if i was to feed them pork meat, what is the effect of the animal fat to fish? and if is not damaging, then is it good for growing small fish?

thanks!

I personally limit what I feed my fish to what would be in their natural diet which is why I hate corn, wheat, soy etc..... filled foods

I would hesitate to feed my fish pork personally

Unless its a fish that is designed to consume mamal meat like P's I would not feed them pork. Their GI tract can't emulsify and process the mamal fat and could cause sevear liver and GI problems for your fish.

piranhas don't eat mammals in the wild on a regular basis, and are not "designed" to do so anymore than any other fish.

I feed market beef liver and shrimp to my RTC, Gar , and Giant Gourami. I would feed beef heart but food stores never have it any more. I also feed them meal worms and silversides.

When a carnivorous fish eats a herbivorous fish, the carnivore is essentially consuming similar nutrients that are found in corn, wheat and soy. These ingredients serve a purpose and are found in the most popular pellet foods. They serve a greater purpose then just being a filler. There is no harm in these ingredients. Keep in mind that those expensive pellets that we purchase are developed by nutritionist and scientist. It's not about the ingredient. It's about the nutrient that a particular ingredient contains and how that nutrient fulfils the daily nutritional needs of a creature. The basic, life-sustaining nutrients are water, fat, protein, carbs, vitamins and minerals. Corn, wheat and soy allow for the delivery of some of the basic nutrients.

NICELY SAID!:headbang2very accurate and true, but i think if people, like me who feed them lets say carrot, then the nutrition will not be balanced. so maybe that's what the guy is trying to say.

Yep

one would think that much of the ignorance about piranhas would not be present on this forum..... but one would be wrong

anyway i completely diagree with Phillydog those ingredients ARE fillers. you fail to realise that when a carnvore consumes a herbivore all the nuitrients are broken down into their basic components inside the herbivore and so are bioavailable to the carnivore. a carnivore's digestive tract is not built for breaking down vegetables and wheats and so they end up just pooping them out
