Can Red Devils live with Jack Dempseys and Convicts?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The RD will attack anything but a JD will be seen as more of a threat for dominance. Cons might survive if you have a few small caves they can retreat to.

What? My RD is very sweet he's always trying to kiss me through the glass, I can hear him!
 mine does the same thing.
OP- i don't think it would work, maybe in a huge tank but still it depends on the fish. I wouldn't try it with my red devil.

This EBJD was in the tank with My male and female rd's for about three months and they never bothered him but I sold the Ebjd last night just so my RD's wouldn't kill him when they decided to lay eggs. There is a convict in there that I want to use use as a Dither. I wouldn't recommended doing it.

Does anybody know what kind of fish Red Devils have to live with in the wild. I am wondering why they have such a chip on their shoulders, why they just don't like anything around their space. Do they get tormented by other creatures in the wild or something? So it is bedded into their mentality always and gets passed down the generations even into none wild specimens?

Sure you can. Look at my stocklist, my Midas is actually a Midas/RD hybrid. Never had any problems.

Maybe I'm a little to optimistic, so better advice would be to carefully watch the Red Devil, but yes it's possible.

They live with fish like Dovii, jags, convicts, midas etc. Most cichlids are territorial by nature but some fish have the capability to kill more so than others. In the wild, another fish can simply swim out of the aggressor's territory but in the tank, it's confined to that space. And yes, it seems the aggression is hardwired into their DNA lol.

I currently have a pair of cons in with my rd but he is only 4-5" no problems but it is only a 150 so I may end up with a spiecies only tank in a year. Only time will tell.

To give you my negative story....

Jack and Jackie were very much in love. Jackie didn't like Connie and must have seen her as a threat so she harrassed her so much Connie had to be relocated. One day a fine young lady named Red decided to make her presence known to Jackie. Unofortunately Red killed Jackie in battle. Jack who previosly stayed out of all arguements was outraged, and decided he wanted the older and larged lady who killed his girl gone. Although Red was 3" larger than Jack, he killed her over the weekend...he has never been the same since.

I wasnt there when the death battles took place or I would have seperated them like I did Connie. None of them were knewly introduced and had shared the tank since they were about 2-3"(about a year)

Just curious, what size tank were they in? And were they the only fish?
