Can Senegal Bichirs live in Brackish water?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just of the one I bought from them.. it was the only one there too.

I wasn't able to get a good clear full body pictures of him but here's a few I just took. I'm battling slime algae all over the tanks glass atm which makes getting a decent picture twice as difficult not to mention the little guy is a lightning bolt..

Thats definitly a captive breed, i would leave it on freshwater. 100% of the time fish store sells captive breed senegal bichirs, only a few store that ive seen sell wild caught since senegal bichirs are mass produced in asia and they are much cheaper and easier to get than wild ones.

Just curious, but how are you able to tell whether or not it's captive bred or wild caught?

1) hes the id specialist lol

2) you can usually tell by the headshape, position of the eyes as well as the shape of the body.

Once the fish puts on size the differences become easier to spot

Usually the head shape, most captive breed have this round head and snout usually more pointed down, wild caught have more flat head toward the top ans snout more square. Like J jaws7777 said usuallyyou can tell once they put on some size. Another thing you can tell is their body, CB have this belly and body looks short and oblong shape, while a WC have elongated body even when it just ate.

Ok so I forgot to ask I have an Oscar that I got when he was a baby, considering he grew from about 3 inches to 7 inches in his first 3 months do Senegals grow fast as well?
I'm kind of half expecting him to grow as fast as my Oscar has but I'm not sure.

My senegal grew very slowly and he soon became a meal for my other bichir that was 2 inches larger, but with the oscars growth rate he’d be able to eat the bichir in no time.

Oscars will out grow a sen no matter what you feed or how often you water change. Usually you’ll want to grow your sen first before buying a oscars, 7” oscar can and might eat the smaller sen.

The Oscar is about 10 inches atm he's in his own 75 but I have the Bichir in a Planted 10 gallon for Growout until he's big enough to drop into the 75 peacock setup, to which he will stay until I feel he put on enough length to live with the Oscar in his setup. Currently the Bichir is about 2.5 inches in length.

I hope that will work, some sen get stunned at 5”-8”, some will grow 9”-10” but rarely will grow 12”. If it even gets to 9” mark it will take years before hitting 11”-12”. Most people would go for Lower Jaw species when they want a oscar or peacock setup cause a LJ poly will have a huge size difference in growth compared to a senegal.
