i bought i nice new big mystery snail, brought him home hasnt came out since, that was last friday.hes been on his back, does that matter?and are snails hard to breed, what would be an easy enough set up, i wanna breed so0me snails our stores dont have...thank in advance

im new to snails so ill give you what i know. snails can roll over no problem but since you say your snail has been on his back since friday isnt a good sign. if a snail is put into a tank and after 24hours it hasnt come out that means something in the tank, conditions or tank mate, is upsetting it and should be moved. i believe that mystery snails are one of few exceptions that are not hermaphrodites.

i master test kit peramiters are fine, my hardness is high, my phosperus is high and my ph is 8. a bit high but thats life ;)

that pH and hardness if great for mystery snails (pomacea bridgesii). To breed, you simply need a male and female of breeding age (about 1" shell diameter). Temps in mid 70's (74-78), a sponge over the intake, and good water quality. YOu would want to drop the water line down an inch or two, as they lay their eggs in clutches above the water line. Typically the clutches take 10 days to 3 weeks to hatch (depending on temp and humidity). Each clutch can produce 40-200 baby snails. They are illegal to ship across state lines without permits, but if you can sell them to your LFS that is great.
As for your "lazy" snail. What is the tank temp? Have you taken him out and sniffed him? If he were to be dead, they REEK. Make sure you offer him a calcium rich diet (green beans, zucchini, cucumber, greens) to promote healthy shell growth.

I think most snails should be easy to breed, just put a bunch of them together and you end up with a tankful?

I agree you should check on the little guy. He could very well be dead.

i def did check him, he did not smell, his shell did not sound like there was water in it he is alive.i put him on my big amazon he came out that night for a while was about the tank then when i awoke he was on the bottom again and not out since.i have fed green beans once string beans unsalted, the trumpets loved them lol...im infested with trumpets but they dont seem to hurt they help my substrate i think, so i dont bother..but im gonna drop the water line and lose the clown loach...the water is good for mystery snails only?do different breeds like different water?my temp is like 76.and does it matter if the beans and veg is cooked or uncooked salted or unsalted?seriously tho thanks for the help great site..

The high hardness and ph help prevent shell erosion. A calcium rich diet helps promote good new shell development. Most snails like hard water. I typically use frozen veggies and just drop them in the tank, they sink and get soft quickly. For fresh veggies, I may microwave the veggie for 15 seconds or blanch (drop it in a pot of boiling water for 1 minute) it. Cucumber I just remove the seeds and hook a chip clip to it and drop it in the tank.

hmmm...so my snail is still alive, but he NEVER moves...im doin another water change, im gonna leave 3 inches out.i picked the snail up he doesnt stink at all he still moves, but one thing i did notice is that on the horn end of his shell he has a chip missing out of it, does this hurt it?i can see inside the shell..he pretty much just doesnt move. his antennas come out, half his body, sometimes his eyes...but he never moves...ive been feeding green beans but he doesnt even move for them.i put him up on my amazon so he has to move to get down..but i dont know what the heck is up?during this time hes been sitting his shell is never closed,if that makes sense, like he is never all the way in i pick him up and he still doesnt go in, i even pushed alittle and he dont go in...

ok is the only diff in apple snails vs. mystery snails size?i think i may have an apple snail not a mystery snail if that makes a difference...
