Only the coolest guy on this forum till he was banned.
No really, great guy

 ya dont get banned. :D the primer is long, and it took me two days to get through it, but it is AMAZING. i even have it bookmarked, and idk if Anne speaks at bichir conventions but i wouldnt be surprised if she does, she's remarkably knowledgeable about these fish. she should write a book on bichirs. if you want a run down though for the sake of your bichirs health so you dont make a mistake, heres a basic summation.... but go read the primer!!! :nilly::nilly::nilly::)

Tank size;
30 us gallon minimum for adult (length is 3x that of fish length, width is 1.5x), i plan on putting mine in a 50 breeder.

Tank setup:
filter, heater - hi 70s to low 80s - , sand - an absolute must as i have heard ppl losing even 7" bichirs to choking on gravel, places to hide but not too many and the young could use a pretty open tank to make finding food easier. tight fitting cover since many ppl have lost theirs to escapees jumping out.

Water parameters:
pH 6 - 8, no pH swings, though mine has handled them in the past it is bad and should not a regular thing, buy pH buffer if you have to, its cheap and lasts forever. keep the water fairly clean with a weekly water change like most fish.

Feeding:
bloodworms, bite size pieces... fish fillets - most fish out of your local supermarket except salmon - too oily, cichlid sticks high in protein, africn dwarf frogs since they are part of the natural diet, beefheart... use sparingly, you have been warned. prawns (shrimp i think), do not feed your fish :goldfish: if you want to feed it feeder fish i recommend baby convict cichlids, though someone might correct me on that.

feeding regimen:
till 7" - twice a day in small portions, leave off one day a week for digestive purposes. vary the diet, do not feed the same thing every day of every week forever, thats bad. clean up whatever it doesnt eat after 30 mins. or so.

cuteness:
off the charts.

tank mates:
nothing that can fit in its mouth and nothing that can fit the bichir in its mouth. they are viscous predators and there is no getting around that. i have mine by itself and i plan to keep it that way. no plecos, they have a tendency to go after the bichirs scales. other bichirs is a maybe, ask about it, i dont feel like typing that much... especially when Anne already wrote it for you.

growth:
they grow fast until about 8" then they get wider and finish growing to 12". they should grow 1" - 1.5" a month till 8". total length varies by genes.

lifespan:
10 -15 years if properly kept.

General notes:
dont need salt. might need quarantining for parasites, read primer for how to do that.

they are freshwater fish i have never understood the fascination for adding salt.Yes as a tonic sometimes but just for the sake of it-Anne

Prometheus: theres actually a part#2 of the primer up there lol.And i actually have some things to add and change minor things howverer
