I think it sounds like brown algae too. Plecos love brown algae so if thats what youre seeing a pleco will help. If it is algae then there must be light or something in that spot that is making it grow there and nowhere else. Can you post a pic?

Adding a pleco is a dumb idea. Not only will it take up space in your tank but they add heavily to the bio-load. I am guessing the tank is newly set up. THis brown algae shows up and after about 6 months it disappears. Just don't keep washing it off or it comes back. BUT sometimes brown algae comes back which is due to fluctuations in nutrients and light in your tank. You are probably feeding too much if you see brown algae a year or longer later.

I don't understand why people think a pleco is a cure all to tank maintaining, their not a gravel vac, their not a siphon for water changes and as stated above ^^ they add to the bio load like any other fish, and being huge they generally add more.

Simple, less lite and more wc. Scrap it off, if it comes back well that's normal, its a fish tank not a beauty contest ;)

I love plecos, but I can't stand seeing overstocked tanks with giant plecos cuz they clean it....? They dont. Not saying ur overstocked.

alot can cause the brown algae, is you tank cycled? how old are the lights? Maybe not haveing enough ciculation in the tank. i dont think adding a pleco a good idea unles you really want one. They tend to be very messy and have heavy bioload
