Pictus cats are a great catfish to start with. A nice 80 gallon tank with plants, driftwood and a school of pictus cats swimming around is just awesome.
I just did this exact set up for a co-worker who wanted to get into tropical tanks after doing koi for 10 years.
2x emperor 400's on opposite ends and a 300w heater. There are over $50 in plants (swords, onions, anachris, and misc others) along with a couple driftwood pieces that provide the home for 6 pictus cats.
Here is the funny thing. We bought 2 pictus while in California, and the others at random LFS around town in hopes that none came from the same farm.
