Atractosteus spatulaAlligator Gar

Platinum Alligator Gar's
I'd have to agree. Granted shortnose and alligator gar can be easily confused for one another at a young age but seeing how well defined they both are already and how bulky they are I'd say the are alligator's. A shortnose will be slightly skinnier then these guys are and they don't have as noticable of a curve to the tip of the top jaw along with having slightly larger scaling on the body. If they were roughly only 1ft then it would be 10x harder to tell the 2 species apart from one another.

Great find btw hope ya got a large pond for these guys planed out as they are one of the largest fresh water fish in the world. Very mild mannered for such a large predator tho so you could even go swimming with em no problem.

Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it... intend to build a outdoor pond for them in the coming months.

Keep up posted on em. Would love to see how they look in a nice sized pond. Ya got any plans on getting some more tank mates for em? I think it would be pretty neat to see a nice big pond filled with a bunch of platinum gar of different species. I did notice tho that it seems like nobody sells shortnose gar for some reason, not quite sure why that is either, been doing a lil bit of research on it and can't seem to find anything on the sale of em or the legality of it.

O nice, all those should be plenty happy with a nice sized pond, especially them plecos. They'd love all that algea that's going to grow in there, lol talk about an all you can eat buffet.

Currently I am feeding them Prawns and have the intention to introduce squid... Just wondering what other feeds are suitable for them?

And when they are larger, I believe a coupe of prawns will not be sufficient.. lol, any recommendations/ suggestions

Lol you'll probably have to start feeding tilapia fillets. Once them gar get to full sized you might even have to feed em full fish. If you go the full fish route I would catch hand sized bluegill or crappie and quarentine em for a month treating em for any internal parasites, after a month of quarentine they should be safe to feed your fish, you could either feed live or you could kill em depending on how ya feel about live feeding.

Squid would also be good as a secondary food for em along with whole clams (no shell) or you could even feed em dead rodents such as mice or rats. Basically anything with a high protein level.
