What was it labeled as?

alagator gar. when i got it it did kinda look like a juvi gator gar that i found pics of. but im glad that i could get a valid id on this guy. how much do florida gars go for?

^^^ Depends on size really and region. If youre down south you can catch them for free (well, that is if there are no laws against it) Where I live, about the only lfs that sells them only had them once and they were $40 for a 12"+ gar. They had a gator once for $70 and he was only a few inches long.

florida spotted gar aka everglades gar

are you introducing a new common name (likely the last thing gars need)? not all Florida gars are from the everglades, and not all gars in the everglades are Florida gars. let's not muddy the waters of available info on gars more than it already is--

Nice looking Florida Gar you got there.

do offense.. but if you can't tell the difference between a florida gar and a gator gar.. You prolly shouldn't be looking into getting a Gator gar. There is one at our LFS thats abit over 24" and looks stunted and emmaciated. It's been in there big tank for about 2 weeks now ( acutally is lookig abit better). It's iir a 600Gal and The tank still looks small.

none taken... to be honest im not looking to get a gator gar. i picked this gar up because it was only $10.95 and i thought that was a killer price no matter what kind of gar it was. when i got it it was only a few inches long and looked like the ones i saw in the pics that i found. if i had looked up florida gar then i would have been able to tell the differance between the two. also b4 anyone says anything about me geting what i thought was a gator gar just because of the price... dont bother... i do have a 300g tank and i am in the planing stages of a indore tropical pond that is going to be 35'x12'x5'. so when the time to move a fish that large i will have the room.

Thats a nice price on a Florida. GL with him, my first one was lil' like that.. now he's a interesting pet. Gators tend to shred tank-mates anyways.. You got a good deal on a nice gar imo. my 2 think i'll give in and start hand feeding them like I do the fire eels :screwy:.. I try not to loose my fingers to my pets. lol. A very chill species that still has alot of character.

so today i went back to the pet store that i got this gar from and to my surprise they had more. about 10 or 11 juvi gar that are only about 4"-5". some are listed as gator and some are listed as mosaic gar. from the gar id sticky i was looking at about 4 of them look to b long nose and the others look to b spotted or florida gars. im asumeing that the floridas are the suposed "gator" ( $39.95) and the long nose are the suposed "mosaic" ( $19.95). i could b wrong though. i will bring my camera phone with me tomorrow and take a few pics.
