Can`t Break My Rays, tips(?)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had the same problem. Two things worked for me great. First, I stopped cutting up the nightcrawlers and made them work for their food a little more. This helps them strengthen up their jaws and makes them more aggressive feeders because they have to fight their food more to subdue it. Secondly, I fed them a ton three times a day until they can't eat anymore. them starve them for one day and throw shrimp in no shell and cut into small chunks a little bigger than they can eat easily. this worked like a charm. within a week they were mauling shrimp.

Another thing you can do is get another ray from someone that is already trained over to show them, or other fish to compete. I have a school of tinfoil barbs which help to make everyone fight for food a little more, and I haven't seen a ray terd since they were introduced. They eat them as soon as they come out.

Ive done the same as you, heavy feeding, but i always chopped the worms, maybe i should stop doing that.. Now i let the shrimp lay with choppet worms overnight, and only feed the shrimps, so il try that for 2-3 days more, and see if they give in.. Ive also bin thinking about putting my discus`s in again, to see if it can trigger, the stupid thing is that if i have to go over to worms again, the discus will probably take it all.

I chopped worms and pretty small pieces of shrimp then froze small portions in ice cube moulds (only perhaps 1/4" x 1/4" blobs in each). Worked pretty well, the rays wanted the worms so they'd pick apart the cubes and of course that would get the taste of both worm and shrimp in their mouth and pretty quickly they would take the shrimp. Once they take the whole blob just reduce the amount of worm in the next mix.

Many good tips here, thankyou very much everybody. I choce to try the easyest once, ive done this many times before, but then i included the worms to the meel, now i dont.. Its day 3 of having nightcrawlers with shrimps overnight, and then just feed the shrimps.. Today when i woke up i already had it ready from the making yesterday, so i put all 3 shrimps in the aqua, and damn, almost evrything went away, im not sure who ate what, but it certenly works.. I made a new mix, and will try again later, it seems to work ;)

Now i have done it for 4 days, and it goes ok, not the way i expected, but still..3-4 of them eat the shrimp now, but not unless i let it lay with the worms for a time.. The once that eat it, i can already see they are fuller then ever when i just fed worms, on worm diet they can not gain very much weight, just keep the weight they already have.

Now after 5 days, i feed 3 times daily, i can see that 4 out of 5 have given into shrimp.. What should i do with the last? should i just stay put with that im doing, and it will turn over just like the others? I would think that the other 4 should trigger sooner or later?

Great info,il try it with our retics.

Steve

For info i have taken out all competitive fish, like discus and other big eaters :) might be a good idea with the retic if you have it in a community tank.

Dunno.. But still, now 4 eat shrimp, what do i do with the last, just wait? i should not give in with worms right? i dont wanna ruin what ive accomplished by now feeding worms again.. Maybe the others will turn the other way around again :p its not very skinny the last one.
