I have fished the landlocked fresh water billabongs of North Queensland and the Northern Territory, and some of northern Australias non-tidal freshwater rivers. Archer fish are abundantly present in those fresh water environments.
I kept a group of archers in a 400gallon freshwater tank when I lived in Perth. No issues. Physiologically they can tolerate either environment but I would suggest finding out if they’re coming from a FW or brackish environment before purchasing.
As far as length of life is concerned I cannot comment.
The main difference between the Asian archers & Aussie ones is the Aussie ones love for Vegemite
