i really like these fish but the biggest tank i have is a 55. can these be kept in a 55 gallon with lots of clay pots, and some small cichlids like firemouths. if i can could i put in an african brown knife fish.

usually on L.A the minumum tank size is usually alot lower than what it actually should be.

i agree. i find the size they say is usually the size you can keep the fish in, not the size it will be happy, healthy and flourish in.

A 1 foot fast swimming fish is not going to be happy in a 70 never mind a 55.Cool fish though wait till you can get a big tank

They are nasty, too.. Would easily kill the brown knife, and depending on size ratios might take the eyeballs off the firemouths too..

You could use it as a grow out tank, Leporinus are very cool but very slow growers with small mouths. By the way would you like some of my baby Grent Terrors, their about 3/8" of an inch and very hardy....

scottfree can i keep one with my firemouth? and possibly a convict, severum, and festivum?

Are you talking the GT or the Lep? Most GT's would be fine with what you listed, they are only semi-agressive and much more bark then bite, however, the ones that I have are still tiny like 3/8"s. As far as the Lep, I don't see a problem if it's just for a grow out tank.....Eventaully you would probably have to go with a 75 min.....
