Can this be done successfuly?

I would think that you would need thicker glass. But I guess it depends on how thick the glass is to start with.

Based on the caculator I have, 0.62" glass is preferred, but 0.5" would do if you feel like pushing the limits.

it wont need thicker glass because the hight doesn't change one thing you can do is take that sheet of glass that you are removing from both of the tanks and use them on the back sheet of glass and on the bottom to help seal it. maybe get a 4 " strip of glass to use on the front. silicone is tough but that much pressure pushing on just silicone might turn out bad thats why i say patch the seams with the glass you have

^Good idea for the discarded glass panels and thanks for all of your advice guys.

If you do the math, you would technically need thicker glass if you calculate base on a full length pane. Of course, bracing the tank at the new seam may help reinforce it, but it is still a factor that needs to be taken into consideration.

It looks like this project may not get started as I can't do anything about thickening the existing glass...I guess I could try a smaller tank but that is not what I really want.

Polish that was a good read,thanks....This whole idea came up after the deal of a lifetime fell through recently...A store was selling their display tank,12feet long,31inches wide and 31inches high and it came with custom stand and all filtration and lighting.Just as I was ready to get it someone snatched it from under me and I have been thinking about a nice long tank ever since.
