Can This Cichlid Breed With a Convict?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think there is always something to be said for "intelligent" hybrids (let's not equate things like the "dwarf leg cats", ugh!) As long as you're not releasing them in the wild, and you notify whomever acquires them, I think it's fine. These are NOT the sort of fish that would survive locally in my area, lol. I've had Convicts for years but only recently re-arranged the rocks in the tank and it created a "true" natural cave system where they were able to breed. Only other successful breeding I've ever had were a couple of Malawi a few years ago.

I'm just a bit disappointed that they didn't come out with a combination of features - clearly the Convict had the dominant genes.

Honestly that seems to be the case for almost any convict hybrid. Almost every single one I've seen tends to lean more towards the convict Gene's then anything else. Only thing I've seen them mix with and doesnt look 90% convict was a salvini/convict hybrid.

I've had pretty good luck with Convicts over the years. Fortunately never had any aggression issues. A bit worried on that score with the Oscars, but only the albino right now, and only because of the sheer size of his mouth, lol. Yes, the eel's mouth is larger, but she's VERY careful when she eats.

Lol if your housing the Oscar with the convicts I'd worry more for the Oscar then the convicts. Oscars in my experience tend to be very lay back fish, even tho they are a predator with a big mouth I've never had one try to eat a convict no matter how small. My convicts had a nasty habbit of trying to kill everything else in the tank regardless of how big it was, they bullied my giant gourami to the point of a 14in fish having only 4 inches of wiggle room on the far side of the tank.

Definitely don't underestimate a breeding pair of Cons. Had a pair that bullied around a much bigger Oscar till I got a divider.
