as long as it doesn't leak, i would say definitely a great find...

probably clean it out really well, vinegar and water, or 1:10 bleach and water.... rinse it well

u will need an overflow in the tank, hose or PVC to get water to the box and from the pump to the tank.

i have seen ones with bio-balls and different filter stuff (carbon, nitrate remover, Mud, live rock)

it gives you somewhere to start, im sure someone else has some more experience with them on here

SWEET FIND!
hell yes its a good idea to try to use it.

first thing you need to do is leak test the sump. (as mentioned above). just fill it with water, preferable outside, and let it sit for a while to see if there are any leaks. if not, youre good to go.

you said the pump works, so the next thing you need to find out is the pumps rating. its either a 402 or 802 (wires blocking the first number). the model # will tell you the GPH rating of the powerhead. then you need to find the chart that gives you the GPH @ ?' head. if you have the box, it should be on there. AquaClear powerheads are supposed to be good at operating against head pressure, but i dont have a chart on hand with the rates. if the powerhead is not strong enough to use as the return, you may have to buy a submersible pump.

next you need to either buy or build an overflow, to get the water from your tank to she wet/dry. there are lots of build threads in the DIY section on PVC overflows, and HOB box overflows are available at most LFS.

then you will need media for your sump. you can get bio-balls from many LFS or online, or go the DIY route with scrubbies (plastic pot scrubbers). theres a guy here who sels them and ships worldwide, or you can check your local dollar store to see if the have some.
you will also need mechanical media. either flter pads from the LFS or you can go the DIY route with poly-fill/ quilt batting.

from there its just a matter of plumbing. either PVC, vinyl tubing, flex hose, or whatever you have available to you. you need to run the output from the pump to your tank, and the overflow from your tank to the wet/dry.

it really sounds a lot more complicated than it is.

no you should never use it....all old sumps need to be sent to me....LOL

Nice find by the way

Wow bitteraspects thanks for takeing the time to right that:headbang2:headbang2

anyways WIN it hold water. the pump is the 802 model and i also found half a 5 bucket of bio balls.

I talked to my dad and he said that he used if for his 55 back in the day. So the pump should be good enough. I dont have the box for the pump but heading to the lfs lateer tonight. So could you mabe wright up a genralised list of the things I need to get? if not I understand ill I just ask the LFS dude

Oh and the demintions ans 18 long 8 wide and 14 high that should be good enough for a 58 gallon right?

Thanks sorry for all the questions

ive been searching for the info online, but cant seem to find it. unfortunately i dont think the pump is able to properly operate under the head pressure of that set up.
generally speaking, powerheads are not meant to push water vertically, so if your sump is under the tank, the pump has to pus the water up 3-4' to go back to the tank. while its rated at 400GPH at 0' head, the higher the water has to pump back to the tank, the lower that number is going to be. even if it has enough power to push the water from the sump back to the tank, youre probably looking at under 100gph at that point.
not only would that give you 2x turnover in your tank (which is by no means sufficient) it will also put excess pressure on the pump motor, shortening its life. if your dad has already put some wear on it, who knows how long it really has left.

but at the same tim, i could be wrong. like i said, i couldnt find the head chart for that powerhead. i would definitely suggest getting that info before moving forward with the project.

as far as what you need to get, it really depends on how you want to set it up.

if youre going the DIY route, you can find everything you need at home depot (or whatever hardware store is near you)
-PVC
-PVC glue
-vinyl tubing
-hose clamps

if you just want to buy the overflow, you can probably get a box overflow from your LFS, and maybe even the hoses to run to the sump. they would also have a roll of mechanical filter pads or filter floss for the top of the drip tray.

so first find the specs for your powerhead to see if its safe to use. then figure out how you want to set it up, and it will be easier to let you know exactly what you need

I think the stump will be behind the tank on the same level as the stand. But after what you said I think im just going to get a new powerhead/pump ill just use this one for makeing some current when ever I need it. I think im going to go the premade HOB overflow box. and ill buy some flexbul tubeing

I have filter pads so all I need is the powerhead/pump the hoses and the overflowbox right? also which would be a good powerhead to buy?

thanks delhezi b
