twice a week at 40% i recommend. too much water changes can remove the trace elements in the water that is already mature.
but, thats my personal opinion. and depends what fish your keeping.
if its GUPPIES then you can get away with changing the water once a month.
Hahaha no guppies i found oscars 4 of them and then i got lucky and found a breeding pair of severums

yep itll stress the fish and take out too much naturual stuff in the water

How so ? If there is natural elements in the water going in then removing it should not hurt anything. I have heard this before but haven't seen any supporting evidence so far.

+1

i have friend who is a breeder/importer, hes been doing it 15 years. he does 50% water changes every day on all his tanks and has been since he started. i know some others that have the same regime and also get in all kinds of fish, from stingray to guppy.

natural elements are from the water and additives we put in the tank. fish use them up and that's another reason to do water changes, to replenish them.

also may i add,
biological filtration is not effected by water changes, as long as their done correctly. by using either, aged water or chemically treated.

beneficial bacteria grows in and on objects, it is not free floating in water and does not get sucked up with the water!
