Looking for suggestions. One of the fish I'm looking for is a true greem terror. I like the saums but just something about the real deal.

True gt I think has more attitude and toughness then a saum. Correct?

There's nothing "not real" about Andinoacara rivulatus... A. stalsbergi is simply another species in the genus. Temperments vary but certainly few of them are like a red devil or other Central American glass banger...

+1, It always bugs me when people call gold saums "False Green Terrors." Green terror is like a nickname anyway.

As for the question in the OP, I NEVER see them in lfs, but I don't see many saums around here either. I would say online would be the way to go. I heard that Rapps stopped collecting them some time ago but I'm sure there is someone out there that either breeds them or collects them in the wild.

Thanks for the Input and comments. Seems as ive always read the differences are noticeable. Im getting ready to start looking for fish I want to get and I guess the hype was more then what it is. Ive got a few tanks set up but looking to do a community with specifics. Would you say that the Saum's are capable in this pretty well?

I have kept GTs (A. Rivulatus) in a comunity setting with no trouble. The tank has to be large enough and tanks mates need to be of similar temperament but it can work out nicly if done correctly.

The differences ARE noticeable, because saums and stalsbergis are two different fish. However, saums tend to be a little less aggressive than stalbergis and would do better in a community tank. Just make sure whatever you put in with it will push back if it gets picked on and you should be fine.

Ive currently got several tanks, 125, 180, 250, 300 and a 350. (just recently picked up two of these tanks for a great deal.) Looking to do a fairly aggressive community. Want to keep them all males, a little over stocked (seems to help curb some aggression) and id like to start them off pretty small so they can all grow together. but im looking to do this in my 350g

A. Stalsbergi is not necessarily the "real deal" in my opinion since just because they are named True Green Terrors should not imply they are superior to the Saums because this is not true; this is simply mostly due to which type of fish was mainly introduced into the hobby first. (Yes, I am aware quite a few take personal offense to using the term True Green Terror but this does not make it not a common name) Personally, I find the temperaments very comparable to Saums. I bought F1 A. Stalsbergi and they just seemed aggressive but also skittish. Regarding Saums, I have had more semi-aggressive Saums and I have had very aggressive Saums, so I would not claim A. Stalsbergi are more aggressive than Saums; Saums even typically attain larger sizes than A. Stalsbergi. They are all great and enjoyable fish, although if you would like a more exotic or rare selection, A. Stalsbergi is almost certainly the preference of choice. Just expect a considerably more hefty price and difficulty obtaining the fish. ;)
