Can Umbee and Trimac live together?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I do not plan to keep them in this tank. Like I mentioned... this is a growout tank and all of the fish in here started at 1.5 inches or smaller. They have grown very fast and I do have 2 other tanks. One a 75G and a 125G. I do plan on getting a 200+ gallon. The aggression issue just started with the umbee maturing so that is why I am on this forum to ask for advice. I am wondering if the umbee will continue to get more aggressive or my trimac will hold his own if they are placed in a larger tank. If need be I will of course separate them and put them in different tanks. There is no physical damage as of yet, but am aware this could happen. Just seeking opinions from experts if it is possible to keep these fish together in a community setting in a 200+ gallon tank. Thanks for all the replies!

I would just separate the Umbee and Trimac pair especially if the umbee is already harrassing the trimacs. If you're getting a 200 gallon tank, I'd place the umbee in there, put the trimacs in the 125gl and move stuff into the 75. Maybe you could make the 75 gl a community tank with smaller cichlid, or use fish that are pre-existing.Just a thought.

I tried with aggressive fish in a 240g... I'll say if you don't mind them fighting all the time then you should be fine. But I never own an umbee before... Wish you luck.

What is the entire stock list of the 100? And the other tanks (75 and 125)? IMO you need to get these fish into more long-term tanks.

It'll only take seconds to know. Put them together.

Impossible. 100g is barely enough for 1 adult fish and they feel stuck in a small box already. I had a small 3" Umbee and he claimed a 140g chasing all the others around.

that's a single umbee 3" in 140g.. You're talkin bout 11" umbee with a mate in a 100g with Trimac pair threat. lol

Let the bodies hit the floor.

it will not work so don't even try..... if that is a breeding pair of trimacs your asking for even more of a problem. I'm guessing the only reason that you haven't had any real aggression is the fact that you only have 1 sex of each particular species aside from the trimacs but the day will come that 1 of those fish takes over so my advice is don't wait for that day.

I say keep the Umbee :D he's a stunner.

That male trimac is so fat it's starting to look like a severum lol

It will only work when they are pretty much under 5in. Plus that umbee seems to rule the tank and if he wants to, he can quickly dispatch the trimac pair and any other fish in that tank. Separate the trimacs and just keep the umbee.
