Can Veija Cichlids live SOLO?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They should clear 12 inch quite comfortably. They are hard to sex fin shape and colour are virtually the same.

I was referring to body shape. I have seen mating pairs before and females were much drabbier in coloration. But as I'd stated, I can't personally account for any thats at the 12" mark.

Thanks for all of the responses...I can conclude at the end of the day all fish are different! But I think I'll let the idea go for a solo veija tank! Maybe in the future I'll see if I can find one for my 210 gallon Tank!

I have kept argentea, regani, maculacauda, and zonatus solo, mostly because they became too aggressive to be kept with anything else in a 150 gal.
They do quite well alone, and will become very interactive once they settle in.
I gave the regani to a friend who put it in a 220, and it promptly killed his red devil and carpintus.
Argentea, maculacuada and zonatus are known to be the more bellgerent Vieja, but never know that the smaller regani can out match red devil and carpintus. My experience with Synspillum, melanuras and bifaciatus are at the lower end of the aggressiveness spectrum But it also depends on the individual fish, the tankmates, and whether the fish is mature or still growing.

I disagree with the statement that they are moderatly aggressive had an argentea that wouldnt tolerate tankmates. Now have zonatus (3 inch and under) that wreaked havoc in a 150 tankmates were 9 to 10 inch pearsei and large bichirs. Had to rove them after a week.

They do just fine by themselves in fact most vieja dont like other vieja.

Op check out heterospilus. They are way milder and stay on the smaller side. Mine is the leadt aggressive fish i have ever owned

Large tank is no guarantee with Viejas either. I just got rid of a Zonatus that was over-running my 540. He's a wet pet now.

Heterospilus are so under rated. I think they are one of the best looking viejas and dont come with the serial killer mentality lol

They grow incredibly slow though
