My dad is getting rid of our water softener and the thing is still loaded with salt. I use API aquarium salt every water change and was wondering if I could start using water softener salt instead?

i actually used water softerner salt for my old cichlid tank. but i made sure to read the label, it was natural no additive sea salt.

i wouldnt use it, says it has "Sifto's Resin" dont know what that would do.
the bag i bought at home depot was brown and it was natually evaporated sea salt.

I agree, just run to your local home improvement store and pick up another bag you know is safe. Only costs ~$5USD here.

Dont use water softer salt if it contains anti-caking(so it wont clump up) agents in it.
Salt is salt but be aware that fine grain vs. coarse grain wont be the same measured with say a tablespoon. A tablespoon of coarse grain will actually be less than a tablespoon of the finer grade. Negligible, but not the same nonetheless.

Anti caking agents, "resin clean" formulas and even iodine don't really matter and are not harmful if you are using it as a medication. You can use it but I question why you are using salt every water change, is it brackish water or something?
