Display animals headed for a "touch-tank" or "petting-area" usually have their barbs removed while under sedation and receive intramuscular injections of anti-biotics by a qualified practitioner. I would agree that some of the thrill of ray keeping is knowing that I must respect my rays at all times. One slip up at it could be costly to myself and the animal.

I agree with this.

I've done a lot of barb trimming when I've had to. Not something I'd ever do at home. And not something I'd suggest anyone at home try to do.

I prefer to knock them down (MS 222), trim them carefully, use an antibotic (Baytril or Amikacin injection) etc...
And as posted, if you do it wrong, you run the risk of hurting the ray and yourself.

Why do you want to cut the poor things stinger off? I think its kinda cruel. It can be done, just like you can de claw a cat. Why do you want there stingers off anyways?? you should not be touching them. And if you are touching them, then they should sting you ;)

LOL hilarious and I agree.
I dont keep rays but Im wonderring why you would keep them if you were going to mutilate them.
I tell Marines who are always modifying things ;"If you want a snail with no shell, buy a slug. If you want a slug with a shell, buy a snail."

In the years I have keep rays, I have only seen the "attack mode" a few times (less than 5).

You have to REALLY aggravate the living crap out of them for them to attack you with their stinger. They'll curl their tail like a scorpion to attack the predator.

I have lay my hands on my rays plenty of times, and they just took off. The worst thing Dats will do is steal their food from underneath them, they won;t do anything about it. Now, if you have a fei feng and they're constantly sucking on their disk, they may attack them (I lost my huge fei feng due to this last year)

I wouldn't worry about it.

well if you are worried about a STINGray stinging then dont get one if you are just wanting to take its stinger off. but truthfully you dont hear much of them stinging other fish. you should worry more about them stinging you more especially if you are wanting to try to take them out every so often to take off there stinger. get the rays if you want but keep the stingers on them and if your dats and bass are bothering them so much that they could get stung you need to get the rays their own tanks anyway. cause thats way too much stress for the ray.

I wholeheartedly agree with the other responders. Removing or clipping a Stingray's barb is only inviting trouble like fungal and bacterial infections.

I'd be much more concerned for the safety of the rays with the "highly prized" Dats and P-bass than the other way around.

I have 2 oscars with my rays, and if they have not got stung I doubt they would sting your fish.
