I just bought a mala a few days ago. It's about 5 inches. In my tank I have a 10 in Midas, 10 in Jag, a 7 in red tiger mota, a 7 in freddy, and a 6 in grammode all currently in a 100 g growout. I've heard the mala is aggressive, but so are all of my other fish. I have a 75 g tank that has goldfish and am thinking of trading these in. Should I put the mala alone in the 75? I really wanted to put him in a community setting, but don't want it to kill my other fish either... Anybody ever keep these in a community setting? I was really hoping too, but maybe this is wishful thinking. LOL.

I have 2 that are about 7-8 inches with a midas, jag, blue texas, red texas, spot face pike, african pike, 2 endli bichirs, 2 dorados, JD,alligator gar, 2 plecos, and a emperor cichlid all in a 135g and have had no problems.........

Overstocked much? By no problems you mean no problems right now a ton of problems later right? Aside from all the cichlids you're going to have trouble with dorados and the emperor cichlid unless you have 400+ gallons and even then no guarantees.

If I were you I wouldn't risk it if you value your fish. I don't think most people in the ca/sa section know the temperament/aggression of wolf fish.

the short answer is Yes..

i got a mala wolf in a deal with some other fish i wanted. he was FAT and happy and healthy, and all the other fish in the tank, were thin and healthy and had no nipped fins or any sign of damage.

that tells me that the guy i bought the fish from kept his tank fed well enough that the wolf fish didn't try to take a bite out of his tankmates. when i got the fish home i chose not to risk my cichla's wellbeing and safety and kept Brutus in a tank of his own. i really liked Brutus, and i miss him sometimes.. ok.. often. should have thought harder about trading him..

Many people are saying yes because its working now. I had a wolf around a foot who was fine but u need understand that in a tank when it approaches. 12 inches and bigger all it will take is one bite and your other fish are gonna be done

Yes they can, as long as the tankmates look nothing like silver dollars or piranhas. They will instantly attack anything shiny that lloks like a piranha.

Also some of the "successful" tanks mentioned have stocks that will not work long-term due to the behavior and size of the cichlids once they mature and the small size of the tanks they are kept in. I also agree with Camphilophus, that this probably isn't the best forum to ask about your Mala. You may get a few answers here but you'll probably get better advice on a forum that discusses Malas. I hope you find a mixture that works.
