can you ever overfilter a tank?

No mater how many filter(s) you have or how big of filter you have you cant compare them to the flow of a river or the ecosystems biological filter

If you could filter without creating more current you could never have so much that you cause harm to your system or fish. However with things like sea horses its hard to mega filter as the current needs to be very low

Actually, if you read TFH, they had an artical in the January 2007 magazine that actually said the opposite, that sea horses like current, but nee places to hide from it in a low current eddy or shelter of some sort. so even with sea horses you still can have a lot of flow and current but you need to take a lot of time figureing out how to provide protective spots.

if you filter exsessively does this lessen your filter maintenance?( carbon changes and media cleaning)

im sure in some way it would. I would cancel carbon out of your media selections unless your trying to remove dies or tannins from your water, but that only my opinion, im sure others dont think so

I think it depends on what you have. You can over filter a reef tank.... Taking all the nutrients out of the water. If your talking about a basic freshwater set up then no, not really.

You have ot look at in in another way. You see we can't reproduce a biolical filtration of a river or reef.....but that massive natural filter also is a constant bringer of new minerals and nutrients.
