Grow up. Posts get more attention here, plus, needlenose gars are much like "true" gars although they get much smaller.
:irked: IF YOU WERE TO TRY THE CORRECT FORUM YOU WOULD GET MORE CORRECT ANSWERS!!!!
Needlenose "gar" are nothing like true gar. They do not behave like a true gar.

Taken from the sticky "What they do have in common is elongated jaws with teeth in some genus and that is about it. None have any characteristics of Lepisosteids morphologically or behaviorally."

I suggested try the correct forum to get correct info from people that tend to be more knowledgeable on the thing u need. that is why the forums are divided up the way they are, Gar forum are for GAR! Stingray forum is for........ wait for it........ wait........ STINGRAY!! correct!! good job!
And last but not least, the Other Caracins forum is for............ OTHER CARACINS!!! That is were needle nose gar belong.
Now im really not tryin to be an A**. Im really not. Well i wasnt. I suggested going to the correct forum so that the OP could get correct and helpful info. Im going to shut up now.
I already tend to seem like the grumpy A**hole

The fact is, whether you like it or not, people see "Gar" in the name, they will naturally go to the "Gar" forum. Suggesting the correct forum is helpful, but...

hey i got an idea. try the correct forum!
sounds rude even though you may not be trying to come off as rude. If you happen to see something that isn't in the correct forum, all you have to do is report it. Sounds a lot better than me saying, "hey I got an idea. Next time if you see something in the wrong forum. Try reporting it!"

Moving to correct forum.

Well after that barage, if you are still a member here then

The fish you are referring to are better known as South american needle fish. They grow to about 12-14" in length and have a reputation of bullying other fish. If the tank mates can be eaten they will be. If not they will get bullied. By bulied I mean repeated bumping from its beak. No harm just a pestering or sorts.

A 75g tank may work for 2-3 and 2-3 dither fish to give them some company. But that would really be pushing it.

A 125g would be better suited for a life long tank. And would give you room for other fish.

They are primarily predators in the wild and eat live fish. But being surface feeders they can be tricked into eating shrimp and smelt after a while. The trick part is you have to toss it into the tank right by the mouth of the SA needle. And use the fish's natural instinct to bite/hit anything that hits the waters surface. And if the shrimp/smelt is small enough it will be swallowed before they figure it out.

Good tank mates are
hujeta characins
silver dollars
payara (tat and scomb)
discus tetra's
xl black skirt tetra's
basically any fish that will not harm the needle and if needed can take some pestering.

Also from my research i have found that they are not true characins. But they resemble other like characins and there for you find yourself here. Don't worry we aren't like the TRUE gar guys.
