Hey everyone, I just bought my first Bichir today, a Senegal that is around 15cm in length. Bichirs of any species are rare and extremely expensive around here , and this one was about half the price that I normally see them going for, so I had to have it. I really want to get a Pleco or Flagtail Prochilodus to help control the algae in the tank, but I have heard stories of these fish grazing on bichirs and removing their slimecoats. Is it safe to keep a Pleco or Flagtail with Bichirs with Bichirs, or is there a better option?

I keep both albino gibbys and flag tails with my bichirs, and i do notice the gibbys from time to time annoy the bichirs by having a "suck".... The flagtail however is great and doesnt bother the bichirs... and he also does not leave big strands of poo all over the tank....:naughty:

Id def recommend the flag tails... however, like my case, plecos can work, but having said that, i had to get rid of my last chocolate pleco for constantly trying to suck on my polys...

Flagtail all the way! :headbang2

if you feed your flagtail enough, you should be ok...i've had bad experiences with procs (7in) and jardini's (12in.) though...it destroyed my jardi's slimecoat and almost killed it (took alot of TLC to get him back to health) and bichirs are even slower...moved my proc to my cic tank and it took out a 8in. severum...guess when they get a taste of the slimecoat the can't go back!?!be careful and keep an eye on them.

There are small Prochilodus (between 5cm-8cm) at the LFS where I work, and they look awesome. I was really worried about the Senegal harassing my baby Giant Gourami, who is around 5cm, but the GG has a pick every now and then at the Senegal, who is more than three times his size. Weird.

Don't mix pleco and bichirs. The pleco will kill the bichirs slowly.

^ agree

Must say that I agree too. I had a pleco in with my sen for a while, and just recently it started in on his slime coat instead of algae. He is now moved b/c of it.

Can it work... yes. But is it something I'd be willing to try? With the percentages of failures... no.
