can you place a fish tank on the floor

You can put a tank on the floor.

I have one of my tanks on the floor of my basement with a heavy rug underneath, no problem. Only issue you may have would be the aforementioned filtration - you could probably only go with a HOB filter/UGF or sponge. Canister would most likely be out of the question due to most canisters needing to be below water level.

If your floor is leveled, yes. Just don't put the towels, it would cause uneven weight load.

was more worried about the ground being cold vers the tank being warm. not really about being level.

yes, the tank will work on the floor, just take a piece of scrap carpet and put under it so it will cut down on the cold.
as for the filter, its not recommended that you put the filter next to it, its supose to be under the tank to get better flow, but I like I said before have on that is just above my tank and it filters, I just dont get the max flow out of it like its designed to do.
If you want, just get some cynder blocks, stack them up and set a piece of carpet across those and then set the tank on it. easy and cheap...

Do you have a tank/water heater? If so, I wouldn't worry about the ground being cold although it will run your heater more. I wouldn't put a bunched up towel under it, but you would be ok with a towel halved over and the tank sitting evenly on it. If you have any insulation or Styrofoam that will work as well.

It sounds like because of your filter you do need the tank raised up a bit, which would also eliminate any reason for having the bottom be cold. I would look into a stand somehow. Try looking in Craigslist 'free' section for a table that would hold the tank, or stand for something else other than a tank. Look for cinder blocks or for scrap lumber. Even if you were to find some scrap lumber and have no tools, you could take a bunch of wood the same thickness and just place it under the tank to raise it up a few inches. Or put wood across cinder blocks. It can be done if you are resourceful. I made a tank stand for a 90 gallon basement tank with no money and just scrap wood. It is not pretty but it does the job and I just threw a sheet over the stand itself and it looks primo, lol. You can really use just about anything stacked up including bricks so long as it is evenly distributed and holding a good amount of contact points with the bottom perimeter of the tank. I have seen car rims used, bricks, cinder blocks, tables/end tables/dressers/desks and stacked lumber used before. I hope that will help some and you are able to find something to use.

you need tools and a little skill. both i don't have.. + worried it wouldn't hold the weight of the tank

Well you wouldn't really have to not sleep over the weight as much as a 125 gal on a first floor over a basement that previously collapsed from a coalmine.. So 2000lbs vs say.. 350lbs.. It would be more assuring!.. It's not hard at all to build a stand.. It's not. And you can save bank by doing so.. I saved about 150$ with mine..

I have a 125 sitting on the floor in my basement with an FX5 running on it.

i have one of my shrimp tanks on the floor and i use a canister, it works fine but is a nightmare to get it started when its been cleaned. the flow wont start. and this is the reason i have just started using a hang on filter

as for the cold (maybe unlevel) floor try and find some polysterene sheets.
