Is there a way to tell a wild caught Oscar from a captive bred 1. A LFS has an Oscar they have labeled as wild caught. The "cichlid guy" gave me a story as to how to tell. Let me know if it is possible then I will share what he told me.

The only sure way I know of to tell if a fish is wild caught or tank raised is if you in fact were the one who caught it and or raised it...

That was my thinking, that's why I wouldnt pay 45 bucks for a 6-7" oscar without researching what was told to me.

i dont think you can unless you get it from someone like jeff R. what did the lfs guy say?

Will rell after a few more replies.:chillpill:

To the trained eye, or by somebody who has actually had them (myself, Neo, oddball) we can tell if it's another species (A. crassipinnis) but other than that, "wild" means Florida farm raised LOL

My belief was always that wild caught oscars lacked red coloring and were mostly black white and green. Is this not the case? I thought the red coloring on red oscars and even tigers was brought out through selective breeding. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is always what I thought.

Not necessarily. Wild caught Oscars from SA can be very brightly patterned with red. But those sold as "wild" oscars often are black/white, but those get red later, as well.
