Can you run just a sump on it's own?

Personally I would stratigecally place some power heads in the tank to add extra water movement if the sump goes out, a heck of a lot cheaper and if its only for a few hours then it doesn't matter, if your overflows clog then you have an even bigger mess then the tank just being off. Most tanks could survive a few hours with out being on if need be too. All it takes is a long power failure and nothing works then!

Like I said a sump will be enough to filter your tank, but you WILL want backups. You don't want to go to work and come back in 8+ hours to find that the pump in ur wet-dry burnt out or your overflow clogged up.

You do not need the canister for extra filtration so much as main filtration (for a limited time) if the sump stops.

i would get a back-up pump if anything...

I run 2 smaller pumps instead of 1 large one. That way, if one pump fails you still have another one going (2.5x turnover rate will support that stockload IME)

Another advantage to running 2 smaller pumps is that a lot of the time it uses less power. There is no need for a canister. They're just a PITA!

I do the same thing as Rally. I actually had one of the "smaller" pumps fail yesterday. No harm done. The other pump kept my filter working until I noticed the problem and corrected it. I run fluidized sand filters inside my sump for added biological filtration.

Good idea, too bad i already brought the pump...

Also I might put two sponge bubble filters inside the tank for a little bit of backup.
