I got myself a magfloat today because I've heard good things about them. I was fairly happy with it after I cleaned my algae until I saw scratches on the glass. I removed the magfloat cleaned it off and tried it again on the side of my tank I didn't even go more than halfway before it created a very visable white scratch. I just want to know if the tiny particles of sand in the water could cause this.

Do you have a glass tank or an acrylic tank? I'm pretty sure that you have to buy a certain kind of magfloat made for acrylic tanks if thats what you have or else you risk scratching.

Otherwise, as long as you make sure there are no sand particles stuck inbetween the magnet and the glass you should be ok.

I have sand in my glass Nano cube, I bought a mag at first, scrached it. never buy anouther one again.

Its a glass tank and a glass scrubber. I'm guessing it is because my sister was cleaning the glass and pulled it way too close to the sand and caught some sand in it, and when I went to use it I was dragging around sand. Right now I have the mag float floating in the sink to try and remove any sand particles stuck to it.

Yes...that's the draw back from Magfloats. The sand can be magnetized and will scratch any surface. Definitely want to be careful when getting close to the sand. I've seen a lfs that puts filter floss between the magnets. I think that helps to prevent the Velcro trapping any sand particles.

Do yourself a favor and just get a hand scrubber. Sand is just to small.

I was thinking of doing that, but wouldn't sand that gets caught inside the floss still scratch the glass?

filter floss is soft. and you could just throw it away as you used it... I really like that idea. so simple... why didnt i think of that.

there is no guarantee against scratches.. But filter floss and similar type stuff between the mag 'n glass on the inside does help reduce the chances of scratching =D Used it for both acrylic and glass mags. I'de still avoid the last bottom 1-2 inches by the sand. and do that by hand or leave it.
