I was thinking of doing that, but wouldn't sand that gets caught inside the floss still scratch the glass?

Yes, but because it's more soft, it will help lessen the scratches. Since it's also soft, the sand will "sink" into the floss, whereas the sand getting stuck in the Velcro-like side of Magfloat is right up against the glass causing it to scratch immediately since there is no "cushioning"

I just took an old whisper bio bag I had lying around and cut it up to fit my mag float.

Thing is I think I have sand in the water because the stupid blood parrots keep digging holes in my sand and kicking it up.

Keep your Mag Float at the top, the sand shouldn't be kicked all the way up there.

I have one with my sand tank and its more a hassle than a help since i am paranoid i will scratch the glass. I usually defer to my 2 dollar plastic putty knife. Its a nice 6 inch wide putty and its plastic so it won't scratch, but its more effective than the mag float

Same here, I have sand in my tanks. I bought a magfloat some sand got in between the magnet and glass and scratched my tank. Now I use a wand with a scrapper made for glass, they sell them at petco.
