Can you use a sump effectively on a 7x2x2 or is an external more effective?

I am going to get a 7x2x2 tank and have been used to using sumps for the last 10 years. As I plan to keep larger and probably messier fish can a sump be effective or should I just plan for externals?

Thanks

Simon

My experience with sumps is they are amazing at cleaning the water via the nitrogen cycle, but they are less great at sucking small particles from the water column. Supplementing with an HOB or canister can alleviate that shortcoming and give the water greater clarity.

A sump will be effective, and any other filtration you want to use with it, will be icing on the cake.
I use 2 sumps on my 180, one a sort of algae scrubber, with mechanical media trays, and another with only bio-media, and a refugium area for small freshwater shrimp.
Of course the larger the fish, the more you may need to do vacuuming and water changes, no amount of filtration absolves one from that
My next addition to the sump will be a DIY foam fractionator(protein Skimmer) which can sometimes delay water changes because it actually removes organics, and non-organics from the system before they get a chance to break down to nitrate.

Pleease make a thread when you start on the foam fractionator!!!
