A sump will be effective, and any other filtration you want to use with it, will be icing on the cake.
I use 2 sumps on my 180, one a sort of algae scrubber, with mechanical media trays, and another with only bio-media, and a refugium area for small freshwater shrimp.
Of course the larger the fish, the more you may need to do vacuuming and water changes, no amount of filtration absolves one from that
My next addition to the sump will be a DIY foam fractionator(protein Skimmer) which can sometimes delay water changes because it actually removes organics, and non-organics from the system before they get a chance to break down to nitrate.
