You can use tennis balls if you want to, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. Bioballs are large diameter spheres specifically designed to have water trickled over them. These large diameter balls have less surface area than other types of biomedia....for example, Ehfisubstrat pro, and have much larger air gaps within the overall bed. These large gaps provide a network for air to circulate within the media bed, which is precisely what wet/dry filtration media require. So, the short answer to your question is...No, because bioballs do not provide sufficient surface area.
 
I used the bio balls in my fx5 before but now switched to pot scrubbie.
 
I use eheim media and blue bio balls and black stars if you can find any in both of my fx5
