I've done a lot of research, but never had the chance to meet this breed in person. And what I wanted to ask, is what are your expierences with the cane corso breed? And I don't want to hear a bunch of "I read off the internet" I could do that also, I'm looking for owners, handlers, or breeders.

I was wondering if this would be a good dog for protection as well as companion. I will be taking the dog to obedience classes and he will be properly socialized. I have owned large dogs all my life.... I thought about getting another akita but the climate here isn't suited for them.

My friend has cane corsos. They are huge. His are real friendly and get along with my pitt bull famously

This is not a breed for the inexperienced. They are very powerful and require a very attentive owner. They are protective, so this is a good and bad thing. If you have not established proper training, you have a very large problem on your hands. So, while you have had large dogs all of your life, I just caution you to understand that this is a step beyond most "large dogs." Granted, you may be perfectly experienced, but I don't know what you consider large dogs, I don't know your age, and I don't know your training level. A large family dog doesn't mean you have the experience necessary.

Not trying to get on you, but it's a large responsibility that most people can't commit to properly. Almost always that ends up being a bad story.

If you are aware of all of these things and have all of the experience necessary, then disregard. I just felt like someone needed to say it.

^Agreed....I have kept mostly pit bulls in the past but may actually be getting a Cane myself pretty soon.My brother has had one and a few of my co workers have them now.I think proper training and socialization is the key to success with any dog.

Great dogs. PROTECTIVE of family and children and will not run off. Mine would sit by the front door on the steps if she was left outside or the gate was left open. If I said sit she did no matter what. Over all, my favorite large dog.
Be careful when new people are coming over, they can be very aggresive unless introduced properly and they are big strong dogs. Did i mention PROTECTIVE of children and family? Beware.

When I was a kid a guy in the neighborhood had two he brought over from Italy, Hercules and Brutus... Mr. Sasso used to call them “U Mastini” nobody called them Cane Corso back then, Corsican Dogge. They would only listen to him and didn’t understand a word of English. You couldn’t go near his yard, but he would yell, Stata zito! Abasta! (Shut up, enough) and they would stop barking and let you in. They would pull us around in a wagon and lay down by us when we picked figs off the tree, we could pet them and feed them treats, but if we went near the house when no body was home or if Mr. Sasso didn’t say it was OK I think they would have killed us even though they saw us almost every day. They were big really big but very smart and they listened to every word Mr. Sasso said but they only listened to him. I always thought they were the best dogs I ever saw.

I have a cane corso and my brother used to breed them. very good breed, but like a few of you already said, this is not a breed for the inexperienced. In my experience, socializing is the key to a well behaved dog. these dogs are very protective of family and you need to socialize the dog prior to bringing people into your home. dont expect the dog to understand its ok if you havent socialized at an early age-very important.
