Purchase a tank and it came with a fx5 bough all new sponges but need a cheap alternative to ceramic rings or bio balls. Need something I can put in as biomedia

Honestly, you only have to buy biomedia once, why not get the good stuff? I would do either Seachem Matrix or Fluval Biomax (or one of the other porous ceramic medias made to be a biomedia).

i agree I am a seachem matrix fan, I would get more than you need as its a good ideal to boil it out from time to time. rotate trays so you not lose your bio-filtration.

Don't ever boil your bio media. That is a horrible idea. Get some Pond Matrix. You can get 4 liters for around $30 dollars.

Pot scrubbers should be used in wet/dry filters. Lava rock works, but can get gunked up easily. Also for it's size, doesn't offer as much surface area as other media.

Put some coarse filter pads, then filter floss, then your bio. There should be no need to clean it. If anything, rinse it off in tank water from time to time.

ya , I boil my pond seachem matrix about once a year, cleans the gunk out of all the pores, again not all of it at once, just a tray and put new or cleaned out matrix in its place.

not sure why you would think that's a bad thing. its all about surface area, and gunk clogs up in the pores and does not let oxygenated water in, good bacteria needs oxygen to do its job. IMHO

If you go expensive, Poret foam is the way to go. Matrix and ceramics have pores so small they eventually clog with minerals and are mostly only a surface media.
